### Cloud-recorded camera video defaults to 360p

Zoom's recording-resolution article lists 640×360 for cloud-recorded camera video unless the host has turned on the account's HD video setting. 720p needs Pro or above; 1080p needs Business or higher (or Pro with an add-on) and Zoom Support switching it on, plus a fast enough computer on the sending end.

### Zoom Meetings cloud recording saves layouts, not a video file per person

Cloud recording can save separate files for active speaker, gallery view, and shared screen — one per view, not one per participant. The closest thing Zoom sells is ZoomISO, an open-beta macOS app that comes with the Enhanced Media add-on ($25 a month on top of a paid plan) and records the streams Zoom delivers to that Mac.

### A bad connection stays in the recording

Zoom records what the call delivered, on its servers or on the recording person's computer, never from each guest's own camera. Asked about a glitching, pixelated recording, a Zoom employee on the company's community forum said such recordings are usually caused by network conditions and can't be restored.

### Free meetings end at 40 minutes and never reach the cloud

Meetings hosted on the Basic plan end at 40 minutes, and Basic can only record locally, to a computer. Cloud recording starts on Pro, with 10 GB of storage per license.

### Is Zoom good for recording a podcast?

For a record of the call, it's fine. As raw material for an episode it's a weak start: each recording is a view of the call — active speaker, gallery, or shared screen — with any network glitch baked in, and cloud-recorded camera video is 360p unless the host turns on HD. In active-speaker view, Zoom already decided who is on screen. Paid cloud plans and desktop local recording can add a separate audio file per person, but there's no separate video per person to cut between.

### Does Zoom record each participant separately?

Audio, yes, if you switch it on: paid cloud recording can save one M4A per person, and desktop local recording can too, even on the free plan; phone callers share an audio file. Video, no. Zoom Meetings records views of the call, not people. The one Zoom-owned exception is ZoomISO, an open-beta macOS app sold with the Enhanced Media add-on, which records the streams Zoom delivers to that computer.

### What's the best Zoom alternative for recording interviews?

BitterClip, if the interview is going to become an episode and clips. ## A Zoom recording is a record of the call

Most interviews, coaching sessions, and founder conversations get recorded in Zoom because the guest already has it. That's a good reason to take the call there. It's a bad reason to edit from what comes out.

What comes out is a view of the call. Zoom's cloud recording saves active speaker, gallery view, or shared screen — separately if you ask, but always a file per *view*, never one per *person*. In active-speaker view, Zoom already chose who's on screen at every moment, and that choice is baked into the pixels. Unless someone turned on the HD setting, cloud-recorded camera video is 360p. And because it's recorded from what the call delivered, a guest's bad wifi is in the file for good. Zoom can save a separate audio file for each person if you switch that on, which helps the sound. It doesn't give you a second camera to cut to.

## Record the conversation instead
